Prognostic, diagnostic and therapeutic potential of endothelial progenitor cells for patients with ischaemic stroke: Hype or Hope

نویسندگان

چکیده

Ischaemic stroke is a debilitating disease with immense personal, societal and economic impact. Thrombolysis recombinant tissue plasminogen activator remains the only approved pharmacotherapy for this disease. As each year less than 1% of eligible patients receive therapy worldwide, efficacious new therapeutics are desperately needed. Emerging evidence suggest endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs), capable repairing damaged vasculature, as one such therapeutics. However, questions regarding their optimal dose, delivery route in vivo survivability remain largely unanswered. Outgrowth cells, generated large numbers by ex expansion EPCs, enable effective assessment these issues may eventually serve off-the-shelf Correlations between circulating EPC levels outcome imply that EPCs also clinical biomarkers stroke. This viewpoint briefly evaluates current evidence, pinpoints gaps literature proposes directions research.

Human embryonic stem cells: hype or hope?

Embryonic stem (ES) cells have emerged in recent years as powerful tools for the study of in vitro and in vivo development. The engineering of mouse ES cells has been the basis of major advances in mouse transgenesis and subsequent breakthrough findings pertaining to many aspects of development and disease (31) as well as therapeutic targeting (47). Similarly, the recent derivation of human ES ...

The therapeutic potential of hydrogen sulfide: separating hype from hope.

Hydrogen sulfide (H(2)S) has become the hot new signaling molecule that seemingly affects all organ systems and biological processes in which it has been investigated. It has also been shown to have both proinflammatory and anti-inflammatory actions and proapoptotic and anti-apoptotic effects and has even been reported to induce a hypometabolic state (suspended animation) in a few vertebrates. ...
